The two numbers aren’t competing — they’re stacked
It’s easy to read two Tyvek product pages citing two different standard numbers and assume one manufacturer got it wrong, or that the products aren’t really comparable. In this specific case, that read is usually mistaken. EN 868-9 and EN 868-5 sit at different layers of the same EN 868 family, and a single finished Tyvek pouch or reel can legitimately be described by either — or both — depending on which layer the product page is talking about.
EN 868-9: the raw material
EN 868-9 specifies test methods and values for uncoated nonwoven materials of polyolefines — the Tyvek-type spunbonded web itself, before it’s been formed into anything. It sets requirements for the material used to manufacture heat-sealable pouches, reels, and lids, but it doesn’t test a finished, sealed pack. A roll of uncoated Tyvek web sitting in a manufacturer’s raw-materials store is what this standard is describing.
EN 868-5: the finished pouch or reel
EN 868-5 specifies test methods and values for sealable pouches and reels — the assembled, sealed product a clinic actually buys and loads. Its scope explicitly covers pouches and reels built from porous material complying with EN 868 part 2, 3, 6, 7, 9, or 10, combined with plastic film. That “or 9” is the detail that matters here: a Tyvek pouch or reel, built from EN 868-9 material and laminated with plastic film, is exactly the kind of product EN 868-5 is written to test — seal strength, porosity retention after sealing, pack integrity as a whole unit.
Why two manufacturer pages can cite different numbers for a similar-looking product
A manufacturer describing the material the web is made from will cite EN 868-9. A manufacturer describing the finished sealed pack — the thing with a validated seal strength and a defined barrier as an assembled unit — will cite EN 868-5. Neither citation is wrong on its own; they’re answering different questions (“what is this made of” vs. “does this sealed pack perform as a barrier system”). A single product could reasonably cite both, and the absence of one on a given page more often reflects which claim that particular page chose to lead with, not a gap in the product’s actual compliance.
What this means when comparing two Tyvek products
Don’t treat a page citing EN 868-9 as making a weaker claim than one citing EN 868-5, or vice versa — they’re not on the same scale. If you need to confirm a specific finished-pack property (seal strength, for instance), EN 868-5 is the relevant number to ask about, since that’s the standard that tests the assembled pouch or reel rather than the raw web. If the question is about the barrier material’s own properties independent of sealing, EN 868-9 is the one that applies. Where a manufacturer’s page states only one, the most reliable next step is asking them directly whether the finished pack has also been validated to the other — not assuming the absence means it hasn’t.
