Class B doesn’t tell you throughput

Every tabletop autoclave in this catalog is EN 13060 Class B — meaning all of them can sterilize wrapped, porous, and hollow-lumen loads with a fractionated pre-vacuum cycle. Class B tells you what kinds of loads a sterilizer can safely process. It says nothing about how many of those loads you can get through in a working day, and that’s the number that actually determines whether a unit fits a practice.

The two numbers that matter

Chamber volume sets how much you can fit in a single cycle. In this catalog that ranges from a 5-liter compact unit up to 24–27-liter units — roughly the difference between one or two instrument cassettes per run and a full tray-based load.

Cycle time sets how many runs you can fit in a day. A fast, unwrapped cycle exists for turning around a single instrument set quickly between patients; a standard wrapped cycle — the one used for anything going into sterile storage — typically runs longer, anywhere from about 20 to over 40 minutes across current catalog models depending on load type and drying phase.

Two units with the same chamber volume can have meaningfully different standard cycle times. Comparing spec sheets on volume alone can be misleading — check both numbers together.

A simple way to estimate what you need

  1. Count your daily instrument sets, not patients — a single procedure can use more than one set if instruments need to be available across the day.
  2. Divide by how many sets realistically fit in one chamber load for the unit you’re considering, based on its stated volume.
  3. Multiply by the standard wrapped cycle time, then add realistic gaps for loading, unloading, and cooling between runs.
  4. Compare that total to your actual working hours, with margin — a sterilizer running at its absolute daily ceiling has no room for a failed Bowie-Dick test, an emergency reprocess, or a slow morning.

When a bigger chamber is the wrong answer

A larger chamber isn’t automatically the better choice. Bigger chambers generally mean longer standard cycles and more energy and water per run, and a half-full large chamber wastes both time and utility cost compared to running a smaller unit closer to capacity. For a single-chair practice processing a handful of sets a day, a compact 5-liter unit run twice as often can outperform a 24-liter unit run once — the deciding factor is match to actual daily volume, not headline capacity.

Redundancy is part of sizing, too

A CSSD or clinic with only one autoclave has no fallback when that unit fails a Bowie-Dick test or needs service. Where daily volume allows it, splitting load across two mid-sized units — rather than relying on one large one — keeps sterilization capacity available even when one machine is down for maintenance or a failed validation cycle.
