What the test actually checks

A Bowie-Dick test doesn’t check sterility. It checks one narrower thing: whether air was fully removed from the chamber during the vacuum pulses of a pre-vacuum cycle, before steam penetration begins. If a pocket of air is trapped anywhere in the load, steam can’t reach that spot at the right temperature for the right time — and the sterilizer has no way of flagging that on its own printout.

That’s why the test is run empty, first thing in the day, before any real load goes through — it’s a check on the machine and the plumbing, not on the instruments.

Only applies to Class B / pre-vacuum sterilizers. Gravity-displacement (Class N) cycles don’t use vacuum pulses, so a Bowie-Dick result from one doesn’t mean anything.

What you need

  • One single-use Bowie-Dick test pack, or a reusable test pack loaded with a fresh chemical indicator sheet — check the sheet hasn’t expired.
  • An empty chamber. No other instruments, trays, or packs in with it.
  • A dedicated “Bowie-Dick” or “test” cycle if your sterilizer has one — a shorter, single-temperature program built for this specific test.

Running the test, step by step

  1. Run it first, cold. The chamber should be at a stable operating temperature from a prior warm-up cycle, but no production load should have gone through yet that day.
  2. Place the single test pack in the center of the empty chamber, resting on the lowest shelf, near the drain — the hardest point for air to clear.
  3. Run the dedicated test cycle (typically 3.5–4 minutes at 134°C once at temperature). Don’t substitute a standard wrapped-goods cycle.
  4. Remove the pack once the cycle ends and open it immediately — don’t let it sit, since some indicator inks continue to shift slightly after removal.
  5. Lay the indicator sheet flat under normal light and read it right away.

Reading the result

A pass looks like a uniform colour change across the entire sheet — same intensity from the center to every corner. That uniformity is the whole point: it means steam reached every part of the sheet at the same time, which means the vacuum pulses cleared the air evenly.

A fail looks like an uneven change — a lighter patch, a ring, or an area that barely changed at all while the rest went dark. Where the color lags is roughly where air was still sitting when steam arrived.

If the result fails

Don’t run production loads on that sterilizer until the fault is found. A failed Bowie-Dick most often traces back to one of a small set of causes — trapped air from a leaking door gasket, a clogged drain strainer, or a vacuum pump losing its draw over time. Retest once, using a fresh pack; if it fails again, the machine needs a technician before it’s used for anything that has to be sterile.
